Five Rumours about Cenwal
Rumours may be known by characters who are not from and have not visited Cenwal. This is just a small sample of rumours you might have heard about this shattered nation.
- Cenwal sucks.
- Anyone can be a king in Cenwal if they’re tough enough.
- If Cenwal was closer to Durholme, it would be like Rovac, because adventurers would kill all the warlords and only bandits would be left.
- Cenwal was doing just fine until the Constantine family all went and got killed in Durholme.
- Lady Leofwen is either the worst thing since Durholme to happen to Cenwal, or a majestic and peerless warrior worthy to rule the whole nation, depending on how close to her you are standing at the time.
Five Facts about Cenwal
For your OC reference, or IC if your character is from Cenwal or has visited it in the past.
- Not Always a Failure: Cenwal was once ruled by the Constantine family, many of whom were also Durholme notables. With the family’s extinction, nobody left lays claim to complete control of Cenwal.
- Fractured Polity: After the Pentarchy-Greater Alvaron war ended in 1305, many of the suddenly-unemployed soldiers moved into Cenwal, some of whom have now proclaimed themselves rulers of their local areas, with most of the rest acting as thugs or bandits.
- Bast’s Claw: The most prominent and successful warlord in Cenwal is Lady Leofwen, a Bastite who was formerly one of the trusted advisors of King Augustus of Greater Alvaron. Leofwen revealed her faith openly and killed Augustus following the war, fleeing to Cenwal and carving out a domain for herself there where her word is law. It is said the violence and debauchery at her ‘court’ is legendary, but she at least keeps the local peasantry safe from the raids of weaker neighbouring warlords.
- Very Local Law: There are no set laws across Cenwal; every part of the ‘nation’ is controlled by the whims of the local warlord or village mob. Some are harsher than others, some abhor undead and some support their use, some ban the majority of faiths and some do not care.
- It Takes All Sorts: Because Cenwal is so divided, it is a land that almost anyone can live in, if they find the right corner. Criminals fleeing from the law, species such as trolls or true elves with limited rights elsewhere in Alvaron, and members of frequently banned faiths all find a place in Cenwal, albeit a frequently harsh and unstable one.
