Cantrip (Free with lore, 0 mana)

Extinguish (Black Cantrip)

Range: 30 feet
Duration:  Instant
Activation Phrase:  Extinguish that light!
Effect:  Will cancel magical light (Light cantrip) and light sources.

First Level (1XP, 1 mana)

Glimmer (Black First)

Range:  30 feet
Duration:  3 Seconds
Activation Phrase:  Glimmer!
Effect:  The spell causes a temporary blind spot in the senses of the target, letting them roll freely over the caster without noticing her; a sort of lesser invisibility since it only affects one person. The target can interact freely with everything other than the caster for the duration of the spell. If the caster actively interacts with the target in the meantime (i.e. talks to them, shouts at them, strikes them, etc.) then the spell is immediately broken. Note that the target cannot attack the caster until the spell ends or is broken, unless they have the “Blind Fighting II” skill. They may only defend themselves from the caster if they have the “Blind Fighting I” skill.

Second Level (2XP, 2 mana)

Cloak of Dusk (Black Second)

Range:  Self
Duration:  30 seconds or until broken
Activation Phrase:  Cloak of Dusk!
Effect:  Caster’s body becomes shadowy and indistinct. The player may use the “Hand in Air” signal until they next attack, parry, or cast. This spell is temporarily disrupted in magical light, e.g. while in the beam of a Light cantrip, while in an Area Imbued with Light, etc. The duration of the spell continues to run while the spell is disrupted. If the spell has not expired by the time the affected individual leaves the magical light, it resumes its normal effects for any remaining duration. While the spell is disrupted, user must no longer use the “Hand in Air” signal until they are no longer in magical light.
The caster will still be affected by untargeted calls they would otherwise take, e.g. appropriate AURA, CONE or MASS calls; Battle Group miracles if they are in the caster’s Battle Group.
Note that detecting a character under the effects of this spell with abilities like Rec. Nature of Spirit or Rec. Magic does not allow you to target them directly.

Third Level (2XP, 3 mana)

Imbue Weapon with Darkness (Black Third)

Range:  Touch
Duration:  5 Minutes
Activation Phrase:  Imbue this [weapon] with Darkness!
Effect:  Adds SHADOW to the weapon’s damage call for 5 minutes. If a second imbue weapon is cast on the same weapon the first imbue ends and the second takes over. This spell will cancel or be cancelled by any of the ‘Fireblade‘ or ‘Flamebow‘ spells.

Chameleon (Black Third)

Range:  Self
Duration:  5 Minutes or until broken
Activation Phrase:  Chameleon!
Effect:  Allows caster to hide and be effectively invisible to normal sight, becoming shadowy and intangible. This allows the player to use the “Hand in Air” signal. The spell ends if the caster moves or casts.
The caster will still be affected by untargeted calls they would otherwise take, e.g. appropriate AURA, CONE or MASS calls; Battle Group miracles if they are in the caster’s Battle Group.
Note that detecting a character under the effects of this spell with abilities like Rec. Nature of Spirit or Rec. Magic does not allow you to target them directly.

Fourth Level (3XP, 4 mana)

Conceal Object (Black Fourth)

Range:  Touch
Duration:  24 Hours
Activation Phrase:  Conceal object!
Effect:  Item touched cannot be detected by ‘Detect Inanimate‘ and is mute to the ‘Talk to Inanimate‘ spell. The item cannot be larger than 4m3 in size.

Hiding (Black Fourth)

Range:  10 feet radius
Duration:  24 hours
Activation Phrase:  Hiding!
Effect:  Area is hidden from magical scrying. This area is fixed when cast and does not move with the caster.

Cloak of Shadows (Black Fourth)

Range:  Self
Duration:  5 Minutes or until broken
Activation Phrase:  Cloak of Shadows!
Effect:  Caster’s body becomes shadowy and indistinct. The player may use the “Hand in Air” signal until they next attack, parry, or cast. This spell is temporarily disrupted in magical light, e.g. while in the beam of a Light cantrip, while in an Area Imbued with Light, etc. The duration of the spell continues to run while the spell is disrupted. Fifth Level (3XP, 5 mana)

Hide in Mirror (Inanimate) (Black Fifth)

Range:  Touch
Duration:  24 Hours
Activation Phrase:  Hide in Mirror!
Effect:  The caster must hold the mirror facing towards an inanimate object of no more than 4m3 in size, and must touch the object with their other hand. The touched object is immediately stored in the mirror. Whilst there is an object stored in the mirror it responds to Rec Magic with Darkness 5. Anyone who looks at the mirror will see the item. The mirror must be at least the size of the palm of your hand. The spell can be broken at will by the caster. Otherwise it ends after 24 hours or when the mirror is broken. Only one object can be stored in a given mirror at a time, and the mirror must be flat glass.

Sixth Level (4XP, 6 mana)

Embody Small Elemental (Black Sixth)

Range:  Self
Duration:  5 Minutes
Activation Phrase:  Embody small darkness elemental! TIME-FREEZE!
Effect:  Summons a small Shade to embody the caster, replacing them for the duration of the spell.
On casting, “Time Freeze” should be called and the caster’s player should don the appropriate elemental costume (this spell cannot be cast without it to hand), then “Time In” in the same pose and position the caster was in. For the duration of the spell, they play the elemental, acting under the mental control of the caster.
The elemental has the stats as per the Elementalism rules document, effects on the caster are paused while the elemental is embodied and do not carry over to the elemental. Similarly, effects cast on the elemental end when it leaves. The caster cannot act or be targeted while the spell is in effect. When the elemental is destroyed or the duration expires, the caster should call “Time Freeze”, remove the elemental costume, then “Time In” as the caster in the same pose and position the elemental was in. All previous effects on the caster then resume.

Protection from Darkness (Self) (Black Sixth)

Range:  Self
Duration:  5 Minutes
Activation Phrase:  Protection from Darkness!
Effect:  Caster is immune to SHADOW damage and the effects of Darkness-based magic.

Imbue Area with Darkness (Black Sixth)

Range:  30 feet
Duration:  24 Hours
Activation Phrase:  Imbue this area with Darkness! TIME-FREEZE!
Effect:  The mage opens wide the portal in his focus, calling forth the raw energy of the elemental plane of Darkness. As this energy flows into the world, it infuses the area around the mage, making it more like the elemental plane. Darkness-based spells cast in this area receive double duration, contrary-wise Light-based spells suffer half-duration. This stacks with doubling from Elemental Elf bonuses.
On casting Time Freeze should be called and the caster’s player should explain the effect of the Imbue Area spell. Whilst the spell is in effect, approximately every 5 minutes, the caster should state “OC: We are in an area imbued by Darkness” or words to similar effect.
The caster must remain conscious and within the area to maintain the effect. The spell will also fade if the caster is killed. The caster should state “OC: The Imbue Area spell is over” or similar.
While imbuing an area, a mage may only cast Darkness-based spells, or metamagic. If a second imbue area is cast by anyone over the same area the first disappears and the second takes over.
Darkness spells should be prefixed with Greater and Light spells with Lesser.

Blindness (Black Sixth)

Range:  30 feet
Duration:  5 Minutes
Activation Phrase:  Blindness!
Effect:  Target is blinded: they should roleplay being blinded and should shut their eyes unless unsafe. You cannot call any damage while blinded, unless you have the “Blind Fighting II” skill. You cannot parry while blinded, unless you have the “Blind Fighting I” skill.

Seventh Level (4XP, 7 mana)

Protection from Darkness (Other) (Black Seventh)

Range:  Touch
Duration:  5 Minutes
Activation Phrase:  Protection from Darkness!
Effect:  Recipient is immune to SHADOW damage and the effects of Darkness-based magic.

Hide in Mirror (Animate) (Black Seventh)

Range:  Touch
Duration:  24 Hours
Activation Phrase:  Hide in Mirror!
Effect:  The caster must hold the mirror facing towards a person or object of no more than 4m3 in size, and must touch the person/object with their other hand. The touched person/object is immediately stored in the mirror. Living beings are unaware whilst stored in the mirror. Whilst there is an object stored in the mirror it responds to Rec Magic with Darkness 7. Anyone who looks at the mirror will see the item. The mirror must be at least the size of the palm of your hand. The spell can be broken at will by the caster. Otherwise it ends after 24 hours or when the mirror is broken. Only one person or object can be stored in a given mirror at a time, and the mirror must be flat glass. A person and their attached equipment count as a single object for the purposes of this spell, as does a single box (containing multiple small objects).

Eighth Level (5XP, 8 mana)

Hide in Inanimate (Black Eighth)

Range:  Touch
Duration:  24 Hours
Activation Phrase:  Hide [item] in [item]!
Effect:  One inanimate object being touched by the caster at the same time as touching the other is hidden. Whilst there is an object stored inside, the object responds to rec. magic. The spell can be broken at will by the caster. Otherwise it ends after 24 hours or when the container is broken. Only one object can be stored in a another at any one time and this spell does not work on an object already under the effect of this spell (no recursive swords). No object affected by this spell may be more than 4m3 in size.

Embody Large Elemental (Black Eighth)

Range:  Self
Duration:  5 Minutes
Activation Phrase:  Embody large darkness elemental! TIME-FREEZE!
Effect:  Summons a large Shade to embody the caster, replacing them for the duration of the spell.

Ninth Level (5XP, 9 mana)

Invisibility (Black Ninth)

Range:  Self
Duration:  5 Minutes
Activation Phrase:  Invisibility!
Effect:  The caster is rendered invisible. The effect is broken through spellcasting or violent action by the caster (e.g. firing a crossbow, chopping down a tree, etc.), but can be renewed after 3 seconds for as long as the spell is still active. This allows the player to use the “Hand in Air” signal.
Note that detecting a character under the effects of this spell with abilities like Rec. Nature of Spirit or Rec. Magic does not allow you to target them directly.
